The 2009 Bradshaw - A Great Tournament!

What makes a great tennis tournament?  How about 174 players in 9 skill categories competing in 155 matches over a seven day period.  How about a tasty lunch and snacks each day, including a luncheon served to over 275 players and spectators on the final day.  That’s the heart of what went on during the 24th Annual Bradshaw Open Tennis Tournament hosted by Cottonwood Tennis Club (CTC) the week of November 1- 6, 2009. But would it be so great if the tennis matches weren’t fun to participate in and exciting for the court-side spectators?  Not really.  But the matches did hold up to expectations, with excitement galore for players and those watching.  Many of the matches went the full three sets with lots of deuce games and set tie-breakers. Whether the bang-bang play of the higher rated players or the slower-paced games of those in the lower ranks, it was universally agreed that this year’s Bradshaw provided everyone with a wonderful tennis experience.

The Bradshaw Tennis Tournament is held each year in honor of Ken Bradshaw who was the first President of Cottonwood Tennis Club and was instrumental in making the club what it is today...an organization of all volunteers, approximately 100, who provide their services in support of this event and many others throughout the year.  This year’s Tournament Director, Peter Gorman, together with his Bradshaw Committee and many volunteers, is to be applauded for a job well done.

An extra beneficiary of this year’s tournament was Neighbors Who Care (NWC). Cottonwood Tennis Club donated all the proceeds from player entry fees, amounting to $855, plus an additional $300 from the sale of raffle tickets, to Neighbors Who Care.  CTC President Keith Nelson presented the two checks to NWC representative Phil Hemberg during the closing ceremonies on Friday.

And last, but not in any sense the least, a final Thank You must be said to the businesses and individuals who sponsored this year’s event.  It couldn’t have been done without you!
