The Court Report
The SPLASH May 2010

Tennis is the forever sport.  Playing tennis keeps us forever young.  As such, the Cottonwood Tennis Club celebrated its disdain for age boundaries at our March 27 social tournament where we highlighted the skill of our most senior members.  Club members were invited to compete in age-restricted brackets.  The champions pictured here were Bob Baker (90) and Bob Peterson (92) who emerged victorious in the 90+ bracket.  We are proud to showcase their youthful enthusiasm.

Though we “went to press” before the end of year picnic took place, it was clear that the event scheduled for Sisk park on April 17th was going to be a wonderful capstone event for the season.  More than 150 individuals purchased their $2.00 tickets in advance.  With such a large attendance committed to the festivities, the organizing committee was able to arrange for some exciting prizes that would be awarded to individuals who won some of the games and challenge activities.  Moreover, everyone was going to be treated to a chicken dinner feast with beer, wine and soft drinks all provided by the club.  The committee who helped to produce this picnic extravaganza was headed by Pete and Kathleen Dalecio with Bernie Tighe, Art Miller, Jim Dittmann, Al Wagner, Bob Walk, Jack Fitzsimmons and Ron Petersen offering invaluable assistance.

The Cottonwood Tennis Club is an all-volunteer organization which fills the tennis courts with four weekly male and female leagues and five weekly sessions of organized play for men, women, and mixed groups.  We have more than twenty socials & tournaments each year and we sponsor six dinner meetings during the season.  We encourage all residents of Cottonwood to become active tennis players.  We have loaner racquets available for prospective members with a desire to try the game for a first effort or improve skills lost over time.  Each Monday and Tuesday evening, free lessons are provided with instruction from several of our members who have extensive experience as tennis coaches.  The lessons are capped off with open play on Sunday evenings for the students.
Overall, more than 4000 hours of tennis are enjoyed by the members.  Visit us at cottonwoodtennisclub.com for more information.

MVP & Most Improved Player goes to... The Cottonwood Tennis League ended August 19, running for 17 consecutive weeks, which began back in April 14.  Thiry-two girls in all joined in to make the league very challenging and diversified.  Around mid-June half the players left for the summer, leaving the rest to duking it out.  Each week their goal was to win a total of 24 games.  Joan ended up far ahead of all the girls winning a total of 226 games, which was 42 more games than the next highest player.

Joan clearly stood out as the MVP for the summer season.  Not only did she play moe weeks and won more games, but more importantly she was so dedicated and practiced so diligently to advance her game that she was recognized as the most improved player for the summer season.  Way to go, Joan!
