RATINGS COMMITTEE
Kelz Kelzenberg, Chair

The Rating Committee has been appointed effective April 2009 as follows:  Jack Fitzsimmons, Kathy Klotz, Pat Bowlus, Roberta Arpan and Jack Peterson.  The Tournament Director is an ex-officio member of the committee, but does not vote.  Members will have regular bi-monthly meetings beginning in April each year to make adjustments in playing levels.  Current color chart levels and Rating Committee criteria are posted on the bulletin board.

The CTC Board has directed that the committee make rating adjustments both upward and downward after reviewing input from leagues, tournaments, instructors and others, including tracking league and tournament scores each season to assist in moving people up and down to the appropriate color ranking.

One-page Rating Review Request Forms are available in the box located below the bulletin board and from committee members or by email.  These forms include requests for members to move down in rating as well as up.  As a retirement community, time will eventually affect playing levels and members can greatly aid the committee and community by making periodic self-evaluations and by voluntarily requesting a rating adjustment.

RATINGS COMMITTEE

The Rating Committee shall be appointed and chaired by the Vice President and approved by the CTC Board of Directors for a period of two years.

Responsibilities for the Rating Committee include:
  • set guidelines, procedures and criteria used in rating and reviewing CTC members.
  • review and update playing level categories,
  • observe players,
  • review and update players' rating levels both up or down,
  • gather current information from Tournament and League/Organized Directors and others to consider in reviewing ratings.

CTC members without a rating may apply for a rating by completing the Rating Review Request Form, including item #1 if applicable.  CTC members with a rating may apply for a change in rating by completing the Rating Review Request Form, including items #2 or #3 as applicable.  A CTC member may appeal a rating by providing notice to the Chair that he/she wishes to be heard before the entire Rating Committee.

Rating criteria considered includes, but is not limited to:
  • USTA Rating
  • Tournament results over one or two years
  • League results over one or two seasons
  • Level of play compared to benchmarked player in next higher or lower playing level
  • Input from League, Organized, and Tournament Directors, tennis instructors and other recommendations
  • Assessment by each member of the Rating Committee after observation of player
  • Prior CTC ratings, and
  • additional information deemed valid by the Rating Committee.

In the event a playing level is changed during a League Season, a player will continue league play at his/her current league position until the completion of that League Season.  The level at which a player enters Tournaments and Socials will become effective immediately.  No change in rating will become effective while an appeal is pending.  members should immediately notify League Directors or the Rating Committee in the event they suffer temporary illness or injury that may otherwise affect their rating.
RATINGS
New May 2009    Ratings UPDATE
The Rating Committee met on May 7, 09 to review a number of requests and recommendations from League Directors.  Last year the Committee completed a comprehensive review; this year was simply an an attempt to keep the ratings current.

The new color ratings lists for men and women will be posted on the CTC bulletin board and will be effective September 1.

In conducting the review, the committee considers several of the following factors:

1.Personal play with the individuals being rated
    2.Tournament results
    3.League play results
    4.Organized play
5.The level of competition the individual typically plays
    6.USTA player performance guidelines

Please remember that CTC Color ratings do not coincide with USTA numerical ratings.  We have very few club members with a 4.0 or higher USTA rating.  For the most part, we are a social club and our members are typically at the 3.0 or 3.5 USTA level.  We do not have USTA sanctioned tournaments.  Beginning players in the club are usually color-rated Brown or low Orange.  Players in basic skill levels are typically color-rated Orange and Black.   Blue is a more transitional color-rating, embracing upper level 3.0 players and lower level 3.5 players.  Green and Red color ratings are generally equivalent to 3.5 USTA levels, although the Red group will include some higher level players.

If a member does not concur with his or her color rating, he or she may appeal it by completing a “Rating Review Form” and placing it in the Suggestion Box at the CTC bulletin boards.  The forms are available in the folder next to the box.  The committee will act only on appeals submitted on the appropriate form.

This is a difficult and time-consuming task for the committee and we appreciate your cooperation and patience.
